Gap Management & Alignment

Shimtech is the largest specialist manufacturer of aerospace shims and laminated shim material in the world, building on a proud heritage of over sixty five years’ manufacturing.

As well as manufacturing our own laminated peelable sheet materials, we can efficiently produce any two dimensional component for shimming or filling applications.  These take many forms, including profiled, solid detail components, tapered or edge-profiled shims.

In aerospace, our shim products can be found on almost all major current and development programs.

As a full service supplier, we also manufacture and supply a range of CNC and photo-chemically machined components and small sub-assemblies, providing our customers with the benefits of a true one-stop manufacturing and logistics solution.

Shims

The primary function of a shim is to provide dimensional adjustment within a mechanical assembly to compensate for:

  • Tolerance build up
  • Alignment issues
  • Wear compensation

Shims can also be used to isolate different materials when assembling components and structures together and can be manufactured in laminated, solid or hybrid form.

Where gaps in assemblies are likely to be larger than most, a hybrid shim, comprising a solid part and a laminated part will frequently provide the solution. Hybrid shims offer strength while still providing for micro adjustment. The solid part of the shim can be used as a bearing surface. Further, a hybrid shim tends to offer better economies compared with a fully laminated shim.

We manufacture shims in all sizes and profiles from both and non-metallic materials, in both solid and laminated, peelable form including tapered shims, as either custom engineered components or standards.

We are currently supporting some of the world’s most important existing and development programs with the supply of high performance, lightweight carbon and glass-fiber reinforced composite, as well as laminated, peelable polyimide components.

Laminated materials

Laminated shims form a rigid structure that functions as a solid but may be reduced to a precise thickness by peeling off layers.

Peelable laminated shims can be produced in variety of metallic materials, including titanium, stainless, copper, bronze and aluminum Type 1A, as well as much lighter weight materials, including polyester, polyimide and glass and carbon fiber composites.

Shimtech offers a variety of different peel strengths dependent on application requirements and customer preference.

Laminated, peelable shims

We manufacture all of our own laminated material for conversion into detail parts or for sale as sheets.  Standard sheet sizes are 610mm (24”) x 1220mm (48”).

Our manufacturing systems use proprietary processes involving the application of heat, pressure and bonding agent to individual foils of material in thicknesses varying from 0.025mm (0.001”) to 0.1mm (0.004”), to produce laminated sheets.

Laminated sheet thicknesses vary from 0.15mm (0.006”) to 12.7mm (0.5”).

We stock a wide range of materials including:

  • Aluminum
  • Beryllium Copper
  • Brass
  • Cadmium-Plated Steel
  • Carbon Steel
  • CFRP
  • Coated Aluminum (Type 1A)
  • Copper
  • GFRP
  • Mild Steel
  • Phenolic
  • Phospor Bronze
  • Polyester
  • Polyimide
  • Stainless Steel
  • Titanium

Other materials can be obtained on request to suit particular requirements.

Solid shims, spacers, packers & fillers

Some assembly techniques require a packer or spacer with a constant thickness.  Shimtech produces these components in a similar way to those manufactured from laminated materials, using press, water jet or machining processes.  An infinite variety of shapes and sizes can be produced according to the particular application requirement.

A full testing and surface treatment service is offered on all components.

Tapered shims

Tapered shims are designed to cope with angles and curves and ensure a tight-tolerance assembly wherever relatively large spaces are encountered between mating parts.

Customized tapered shims are manufactured using a technique that does not require specialist tooling.  Such shims can be produced precisely and economically in small or large batches.

Where particular flexibility is required, for example to suit complex geometries or curvatures, tapered shims can be manufactured from polyimide material.  Polyimide can also be used to deliver a weight saving.

Machined components

Shimtech has a range of versatile, modern, high speed 3 and 4-axis CNC milling/turning equipment, including equipped with twin pallet loading capability.  Maximum component sizes are 914mm (36”) x 381mm (15”) for milling, and 406mm (16”) diameter for turning.

Photo-chemically machined components

Photo chemical machining enables the production of highly-accurate and intricate components through an acid etching process. The technique is particularly attractive for use in electronics, filtration and aerospace and defence applications.

Minute holes and radii, at a pitch that would make conventional processes uneconomic, can be produced without inducing burrs or stresses in the material. In addition, tooling costs are low, resulting in highly cost-effective solutions for prototype development of thin sheet details. A wide range of metals can be etched in a range of thicknesses from 0.127mm (0.005”) up to 1.6mm (0.063”), from a standard sheet size of 450mm (18”) x 300mm (12”).

Sub-assemblies

With a highly skilled and experienced workforce, Shimtech can produce small sub-assemblies i.e. formed or flat details with the addition of anchor nuts or other AGS hardware either by means of pressing, bonding, or by spot welding

These components can be supplied in kit form along with additional purchased hardware if required

Seals & gaskets

Through our sealing solutions and supply chain integration business, PSG, we are specialist manufacturers and suppliers of “O” ring seals in standard and highly exotic materials, industrial gaskets, shims, silicone rubbers and plastic mouldings which can be supplied on a DLF basis either in individual batches, in kitted form, or as part of a built up sub-assembly.
