Shimtech assembles the “Hi-Q Factor” at Le Bourget

Paris-Le Bourget, France. Shimtech Industries (“Shimtech”), the fast-growing, international

aerospace components supplier, is showcasing the full depth of its capability in composite aero

structures at the 2015 International Paris Air Show.

Taking center stage on display at the Shimtech stand will be a complete, integrated sub-assembly

forming part of the dorsal fuselage fairing of Bombardier’s popular Q400 series.

The entire dorsal fuselage faring for the Q400 programme - of which the unit on display at Le

Bourget forms an integral part - is manufactured by Shimtech, together with a number of other

flight-critical structures.

The sub-assembly, comprising painted epoxy Kevlar® composite panels with precision machined

and fabricated metallic details, was manufactured and assembled in-house by ACTI, part of

Shimtech’s recently expanded Composite Engineered Structures Division.

With five large autoclaves and the ability to handle very high temperate cures (up to 850F/454C),

Shimtech has recently emerged as one of the largest, full-service composite fabrication houses in

North America outside of the traditional “super tier ones”.

The Q400 sub-assembly, together with other high-performance, lightweight fibre-reinforced

components fabricated out of BMI carbon, and carbon and glass epoxy, can be viewed on

Shimtech’s at Stand D192 in Hall 4 at the International Paris Air Show 2015.

Commenting on the display, Shimtech CEO, Howard Kimberley said:

“We are delighted to be able to spotlight the technical strength of our Composite Engineered

Structures Division at the 2015 International Paris Air Show at Le Bourget.

“Our facilities are approved to many of the most demanding composite fabrication specifications

in the world, including Boeing, Bombardier, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and others.

“With the recent integration of ACTI, we can fabricate and final assemble much larger composite

structures of up to 40ft (12m) in length with a cross section of up to 10ft (3m). We are proud that

this now establishes Shimtech as a cost-effective source for much larger fuselage, wing and

empennage structures, together with fairing assemblies such as the one we have on display here

at Le Bourget.

“We also now join a rarified group of composite houses worldwide with the capability to cure at

the highest possible temperatures required by higher performance thermoset materials and resin

systems. Our recent support of the F-22 and F-35 programmes attests to this capability.”
